2023 Lunar New Year Celebration
It was a wonderful afternoon inside Summit Public Library today for our annual Chinese New Year celebration. After three years of the pandemic, community members finally got together in-person again to celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Rabbit. Over 200 families from Summit and the surrounding towns attended our event.
The celebration happened on Sunday, 1/22/2023, from 2:00pm to 4:30 pm, hosted by the library along with the Chinese Club. We prepared a variety of authentic Asian food, including those of China, Malaysia, and Korea etc., to the guests. A long string of culture demonstration tables was set up to showcase Chinese painting and calligraphy, Peking Opera, tea ceremony, paper crafts, as well as Korean traditional toys. The “God of Wealth” walked around and handed out more than 500 red envelops to the children. Local artists and children also performed Chinese Kungfu, folk instruments, and folk dances during the ceremony. The performance ended with a children’s dragon parade. Food, art, music, dance, thunderous applause and laughter, memories were made inside the library in this blissful afternoon!
Special thanks to our sponsors for their long-term support! Without their generosity, our event could not be so successful!
Also, thanks to the performers, library staff, and the Chinese Club volunteers who generously contributed their talents and time to make this celebration possible.
Finally, to all friends in our community who attended our event, thank you for your enthusiastic participation in this year’s celebration! It was thrilling to see you all!
Best wished to all members of our community for a joyous Year of the Rabbit!

Celebrating the dragon boat festival
Chinese Club will be holding the Dragon Boat Festival celebration at Summit Village Green on May 21, 2022! Come and join us!
Dragon Boat Festival has been celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Lunar calendar for over 2,000 years. Dragon Boat Festival 2022 is June 3, 2022, and there are several legends about its origin. The most popular one is that the holiday is for honoring Qu Yuan, an ancient Chinese poet and loyal politician who drowned in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth month.
Dragon Boat Race is the most important activity of the festival, symbolizing the race to find Qu Yuan in the river. Teams race down rivers in colorful boats shaped like dragons. During the event you can join us a game of dryland Dragon Race to feel the fun of the race.
Zongzi is the traditional food of the festival. The rice dumplings are stuffed with various fillings and steamed or boiled inside bamboo leaf. Come join us and try making zongzi with us! These recipes include a sweet version with red beans and a savory version with pork belly.
Xiang bao (Incense & Herb Bags), mostly worn by children, are believed to provide protection and bring luck. This traditional craft is usually made out of cloth, ribbon, or paper, and filled with fragrant herbs and powders. With our volunteer's help, you can make one of your own!
And there are many other activities such as crafts, presentations, fun games, performance and more going on! Please join us for the celebration!
